Why are we  concerned with poverty in India?

India is a country with rich cultural diversity and notable social issues – caste system, poverty, child labour, child marriage, illiteracy, gender inequality, dowry system and religious conflict etc., making her a unique and divergent place for youth to explore and serve.

As one of the fastest growing economies in the world, poverty in India remains pervasive. According to the Multidimensional Poverty Index 2016 report done by Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), the percent MPI of India in 2005/06 is 53.7, which means 650 million of the population are poor.

Over half of the population do not have proper shelter and access to decent toilets. Most villagers still suffer from the lack of clean and nearby water source, no secondary school, and not even proper roads connecting them.
